“Lend a Hand, Heal a Heart”: UTalk CSR Activity
By HR and Communications Department
26 June 2018

There’s a saying that goes, “Every child is a different kind of flower, and all together, make this world a beautiful garden.” UTalk volunteers bore witness to the realness of this famous quote as they were welcomed by the amazing kids from Helping Hands, Healing Hearts Ministries Philippines Inc. (HHM) on June 23, 2018, in Camp 7, Baguio City.

The preparations leading to the visit in June was well underway as early as the first week of May. It all started with the Talent Acquisition and Communications Department (TACD) reaching out to Helping Hands’ Marissa V. Dela Peña  (Center Head  Children's Recovery Unit – Baguio) to inquire if they can accommodate UTalk for an outreach program at their Camp 7 office. We  were indeed blessed to be given approval since there were instances when such similar requests from other organizations had to be declined by HHM.

Upon receiving a notification from HHM that UTalk was given a confirmed schedule for the visit, a call for volunteers was launched with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity officially named as “Lend a Hand, Heal a Heart with UTalk”. The response was awe-inspiring with the number of volunteers exceeding the goal of maximum 15 employees! Due to the guidelines from Helping Hands on the allowed visitors per company, TACD had to carefully select those who will be part of the volunteer group. However, other volunteers who signed up, but didn’t quite make it to the 15, were assured that they will be invited again for future similar outreach programs as it would be an honour to have these other volunteers on board such activities.

UTalkers again proved that behind each UTalk heart is a big golden one, as donations in kind kept arriving mostly from anonymous donors – clothes for kids and infants, shoes, toiletries and medicines. Boxes and boxes of donations filled with different items accompanied with love and care came pouring in even after the initial deadline given. Indeed, UTalkers are one in mind and heart especially when it came to how much we care for the children of the future.

On the day of UTalk’s CSR activity, the kids of HHM, who are lovingly called “warriors” by their in-house staff, were treated to a fun-filled morning where they got to watch a puppet show with our very own UTalkers as puppet masters, played indoor games with the volunteers, learned basic hygiene tips from the company nurse, and shared a hearty meal before the end of the program. Throughout the activity, volunteers personally saw how HHM has managed to keep the sick, abandoned and orphaned kids appreciate the gift of life by strengthening their faith in Christ.

To culminate the “Lend a Hand, Heal a Heart with UTalk” activity, Senior Operations Manager, Norhaine Dadula, presented a special Certificate of Recognition to Helping Hands for their passion in helping the children housed in their center. Ms. Marissa received the said certificate on behalf of HHM.

The program ended with hearts filled with hope and strong desire to make this heart-warming activity happen again in the very near future. After all, you don’t have to wear a cape to be a hero. You just need to care.
