In support of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)’s efforts to help locators to improve their smoking cessation programs through proper counselling as well as to assist locator enterprises in their compliance with the Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance, UTalk representatives participated in the “Smoking Cessation Training Program” held last August 28 &29, 2018.
Merry Luz Labanio and Milady Vhianne Tapla represented UTalk for the said 2-day training. They were joined by participants from other companies throughout Baguio City. On the first day of the training, several distinguished guest speakers were invited to discuss essential topics related to understanding tobacco health and economic feedback, as well as identifying effective interventions. Come second day of the training, the speakers focused more on several medical solutions, ways on how to deal with low motivation, and ultimately coming up with concrete plans on the implementation of smoking cessation in the workplace.
It was re-iterated by the speakers that Executive Order (EO) No. 26 must be followed for workplaces that have Designated Smoking Areas (DSAs). In the EO, details of the guidelines on the standards for DSAs are outlined. It also provides the exclusion of certain public places (e.g. schools, optical clinic, elevators, etc.) from having DSAs. Further, the EO stipulates the duties and obligations of Persons-in-Charge along with the possible penalties. Section 8 of the EO is dedicated to the Smoking Cessation Program which was the goal of the aforementioned training participated in by UTalk representatives.
UTalkers can look forward to future announcements from the Human Resource Department (HRD) regarding further details of the Smoking Cessation Program implementation.
