As UTalk continuously pushes for active involvement in activities that aim to strengthen ties with the focal institutions in the Benguet community, it’s with great pride and excitement that we became part of the 33rd PEZALUBONG and BCEZ Kick-off @40. The event which was held on November 26, 2018, spearheaded by Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Baguio City was attended by several other PEZA Locators (PEZA certified companies).  The program was an avenue to bring together organizations all over the city that are one in aspiring for quality services and quality life.

Gracing the event were Baguio Councilor Joel Alangasab, Dr. Rowena P. Galpo (City Health Officer), Dr. Rolando Enrique Domingo (Undersecretary of Health), Dr. Gundo Aurel Weiler (WHO Representative in the Philippines), Atty. Rene Joey Mipa (Zone Administrator, BCEZ and Head, Cluster 3) and BGen Charito Plaza (Director General, PEZA). Together, they helped launch several programs involving PEZA and PEZA-certified companies including UTalk.

Launch PEZALUBONG IT-BPO Convergence Exhibit

The event began with the ceremonial ribbon cutting headed by Atty. Rene Joey Mipa and BGen Charito Plaza .The ribbon cutting held in the morning marked the official opening of the PEZALUBONG activity which will run from November 26, 2018 until January 25, 2019. In the PEZALUBONG activity area there are several food kiosks, overruns bazaar, BPO and ESL companies information booths (including that of UTalk). A recruitment Job Fair is also set to happen as part of this 2-month long activity wherein UTalk will surely take part in with high hopes of sourcing another batch of excellent teachers.

Launch of Revolution Smoke-Free

Councilor Joel Alangasab, the principal author of the Smoke-Free Baguio shared some inspiring thoughts on why he has been very determined to put into action the city ordinance. He put emphasis on the importance of valuing the lives of not just that of the smokers but more-so those who may suffer the effects of second and third hand smoking. He further calls the act of smoking as “evil” in nature since it ultimately brings the early end of the lives of the members of the community.

Dr. Gundo Aurel Weiler, put to light the international perspective of the current situation when it comes to smoking-related illnesses and social problems. He pointed out relevant data that would definitely cause everyone to think twice on their smoking habits. He further calls on all of Baguio to continue with its campaign in promoting the Smoke-Free community.

To further affirm everyone’s cooperation in the Revolution Smoke-Free advocacy, participants were asked to leave their handprints on the Breathe Clean Air commitment wall. The handprints symbolize each organization’s pledge to promote and support the Smoke-Free Baguio campaign. Representing UTalk in this commitment was UTalk Company Nurse, Fretzie Salonga.

Launch of Ecozone Worker’s Welfare Desk

Another highlight of the event was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Ecozone Woker’s Welfare Desk which is a combined helpdesk for the Social Security System (SSS), Pag-ibig, Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC), PhilHealth, and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). The Ecozone helpdesk will be strategically situated in select PEZA-certified establishments all over the city that aim to provide prompt assistance to inquiries from employees of companies that are PEZA-certified.
